HF Propagation Guide for Operators

  • Solar Flux Index (SFI): Higher is better. SFI > 120 means excellent daytime ionospheric ionization on 20m, 15m, 12m, and 10m.
  • K-Index: Planetary geomagnetic disturbance (0 to 9). Values 0-2 indicate quiet, stable band conditions. K > 4 indicates geomagnetic storming.
  • A-Index: 24-hour linear geomagnetic activity. A < 10 is ideal for low-noise DX.
  • Severe Weather Net Operations: In the event of severe weather warnings in St. Clair County, monitor 145.190 MHz and 444.725 MHz for the active ARES/Skywarn net.
